Brecon Beacons (one for just the pawrents)!

The Brecon Beacons is a stunning mountain range located in South Wales, known for its dramatic landscapes, rugged peaks, and picturesque valleys. Part of the Brecon Beacons National Park, it features a variety of natural wonders, including waterfalls, caves, and wide expanses of heather-covered moorland. The highest peak, Pen y Fan, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and is a popular spot for hikers. The area is rich in wildlife, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like walking, cycling, and stargazing, thanks to its designation as an International Dark Sky Reserve. The Brecon Beacons are a true haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Accommodation:

During our stay in the Brecon Beacons, we had the pleasure of staying in a beautiful shepherd's hut perched on top of a hill, offering some of the most incredible views of the mountain range. The accommodation came with all the comforts you’d need for a memorable stay, including:

  • A private wood-fired hot tub for ultimate relaxation

  • A daily breakfast hamper to start the day right

  • A BBQ with a pizza oven for evening meals under the stars

  • A fire pit for cozy nights

  • A swinging chair for those peaceful moments with a view

  • A bike store, which was perfect for storing our mountain bikes during our stay

The owner of the shepherd's hut lived nearby and was incredibly friendly and accommodating. While the proximity may not offer complete privacy for some, we found it to be a positive aspect, as the owner was on hand to assist with anything we needed, without intruding. The warm weather and sunny days made our stay even more enjoyable, and we’d absolutely recommend this spot — it’s up there with one of our top three places to stay. Accommodation link

Things to do in the area:

🏞️ Hike to Pen-y-Fan: The Highest Peak in the Brecon Beacons

If you visit the Brecon Beacons, a trip to Pen-y-Fan is a must. Standing tall at 886 meters (2,907 feet), it’s the highest peak in the range and offers some of the best views around. The summit provides a sweeping panorama of the mountains and valleys, making it a prime spot for photography and simply taking in the beauty of the region.

The hike up is manageable for most people, even those who aren't seasoned hikers. It takes about an hour to reach the top, depending on your pace, and the path is clear and well-maintained, though there are a few steep sections to conquer. At the summit, you’ll find a large cairn marking the highest point, adding a nice touch to your hiking adventure. Be sure to arrive early if you’re planning to hike, as the parking area at the base can get quite busy, especially during peak times.

💦 Wild Swimming in the Brecon Beacons

One of the most unique ways to experience the Brecon Beacons’ beauty is by going wild swimming. The region is dotted with pristine lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, offering incredible spots for a refreshing swim. If you're after a picturesque, tranquil setting, Llyn y Fan Fach is a must-visit — a mountain lake that’s surrounded by dramatic scenery. For waterfall enthusiasts, the Waterfall Country is a treasure trove, with cascading falls like Sgwd Clun-gwyn and Sgwd Isaf Clun-gwyn. These beautiful spots make for perfect wild swimming locations, so don’t forget your swimsuit!

For mountain biking enthusiasts, Bike Park Wales is the place to be. Nestled in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, this world-renowned mountain biking destination offers over 40km of trails catering to all skill levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, the park features a variety of runs, from flowy downhills to technical sections and jumps. Plus, with a dedicated uplift service, you can easily reach the top of the trails and focus on the fun descents.

For beginners or those who prefer a relaxed ride, Kermit, a green trail, is a great place to start. It’s full of flowy sections that don’t require too much skill, making it perfect for easing into the experience.

Food:

One of the joys of staying at the shepherd's hut in the Brecon Beacons was having the option to cook our own meals. With the BBQ and pizza oven at our disposal, we made the most of the beautiful weather and enjoyed several meals in the great outdoors. The accommodation also provided a breakfast hamper that included croissants, jams, butter, and yoghurt pots — the perfect start to each day.

For our hikes and mountain biking excursions, we packed our own lunches to take with us, ensuring we stayed fuelled throughout the day. It was the ideal way to make the most of our outdoor adventures while keeping things simple and convenient.

That being said, if you’re not in the mood to cook, the Brecon Beacons area is full of cafés, restaurants, and pubs offering a range of delicious local food. Whether you’re looking for a hearty meal after a day of hiking or a light bite, you’ll be spoilt for choice in this beautiful region. From quaint tearooms to traditional Welsh pubs, there’s something to satisfy every craving.
